La Gran Isla de Chiloé fue hace siglos una porción de tierra unida al continente, sin islas de mayor importancia. Pero en algún momento todo esto cambió. Según cuentan los aborígenes del lugar, todos vivían en una gran armonía con la naturaleza y los dioses o pillanes que los cuidaban. Uno de ellos, el más importante a nivel local era la serpiente benigna Tren-Tren Vilu (del Mapudungún Tren Tren que significa tierra y Vilu que significa culebra) que representa a la tierra.
En cierto momento Tren-Tren Vilu había advertido a los hombres que vivían con ella, que iba a llegar un día para el cual debían estar preparados, pues despertaría la serpiente maligna Kai-Kai (de Kai Kai que significa agua y Vilu que significa culebra), que representa a el mar y las aguas en general.
Y llegó un día en el esta advertencia se hizo realidad. Kai-Kai Vilu, había despertado con una furia inmensa, provocando que las aguas poco a poco ocuparan los lugares cercanos al mar. Los hombres corrían despavoridos para salvarse, pidiendo ayuda a
Tren-Tren Vilu, para que los cobijara y ayudara.
Tren–tren, al ver la maldad de Kai–kai, que cubría las tierras, convirtiendo a los hombres en peces, al igual que todos los animales terrestres que eran alcanzados por el agua, empezó a elevar las tierras y salvar a los hombres de las aguas que se elevaban cada vez más y más.
En ese momento las dos fuerzas antagónicas, Tren-Tren y Kai-Kai, se textualmente se trenzaron en un horrible combate, destruyendo por la furia de la lucha, aldeas, bosques y todo lo que se encontraba alrededor. Como consecuencia del violento encuentro dieron nacimiento a tantas islas como tiene hoy en día el archipiélago de Chiloé.
Al final, las fuerza benignas de Tren-Tren, ganó en parte la batalla, expulsando a Kai-Kai a las profundidades del mar. Los hombres agradecieron a Tren-Tren su ayuda y esta les hizo prometer no dejarse llevar por la maldad y las ambiciones del mundo, ayudando siempre a la naturaleza y extrayendo de ella sólo lo necesario para sobrevivir, porque si en algún momento vuelven a tentarse con estas cosas, despertaría de nuevo Kai-kai Vilu, para castigar a los hombre y vengarse por su derrota, tratando de devastar la vida en la tierra nuevamente.
Se dice también que Tren-tren se manifiesta a través de un cerro mitológico que se eleva para escapar de las aguas, por eso es bastante común encontrar cerros en Chiloé y alrededores a los cuales los lugareños llaman Tren Tren.
The Great Island of Chiloé
The Great Island of Chiloe was actually a great portion of land attached to the continent, without very important islands. However, this changed at some point. According to what some indigenous people from the place said, everybody lived in great harmony with nature and the Gods or Pillanes who looked after them. One of them, one of the most important at local level was a benign snake Tren-Tren Vilu (which comes from the Mapudungún Tren – Tren = land and Vilu = snake) which represents the Land.
On certain occasion Tre-tren Vilu had warned all men living with her to be prepared and aware of the existence of of an evil snake called Kai-Kai (from the mapudungún Kai- Kai= water and Vilu=snake) which would wake up some day in the future. This snake represents the sea and water in general.
And some day this warning became true. Kai- Kai Vilu had woken up with an immense
fury causing that nearby places were quickly occupied by these waters. Men ran terrified and in dismay. pleading help from Tren- Tren Vilu, which was supposed to help them and project them.
Tren- Tren, realising Kai- Kai’s wickedness which covered the lands, turning not only men into fish, but also every land animal reached by the water, started raising lands
and saving men from even higher waters.
In this moment the two conflicting forces: Tren- Tren and Kai –Kai plaited in a horrible combat, destroying in their way, forests, villages and everything surrounding them. As a result of this violent encounter, many of the actual islands of The Archipelago of Chiloe were born.
Finally, the benign force won the first part of the battle, driving out Kai – Kai from the bottom of the sea. Men thanked Tren – Tren for his help, and he made them promise not to be driven by evilness and the ambitions of the world, always helping nature and only taking from it the necessary to survive, because if in some moment the opposite happens, Kai – Kai will wake up again , punish men and take revenge on them due to his past defeat, trying to devastate life on earth.
It also said that Tren –Tren manifests himself through a mythological hill which rises up to escape from the waters, however it is very common to find hills in Chiloe and its surroundings which are called by the peasants Tren- Tren.
