El Cuchivilu (Cuchi – cerdo, Vilu – culebra), es un monstruo marino mitad cerdo y mitad culebra, de apetito voraz, cochino, de actitud sigilosa y traicionero.
Habita las playas fangosas de Chiloé. Por las noches abandona su cueva, cerca de un barranco, para ir a comer donde hay cercos de pesca (*) a la orilla del mar, encontrando peces y moluscos atrapados dejados por los pescadores.
Siempre deja rastro de sus fechorías, como huellas en el arena y los palos del cerco rotos debido a su desesperación al comer.
A veces se le puede escuchar en las noches con un gruñido similar a un cerdo común, pero al ir a verlo, o al tratar de encontrarlo, se desvanece, y sólo puede ser visto por los brujos.
También se dice que después que un corral de pesca es atacado por el Cuchivilu, deja un hedor sin igual y embruja el lugar impidiendo las faenas de los pescadores.
Si alguien intenta ingresar al lugar del desastre, es muy posible que contraiga sarna.
La única manera de eliminar el maleficio, es buscar la ayuda de un machi que por medio de unos cánticos en lenguajes extraños y un ritual de danzas con abundante humo, aleja el maleficio de este lugar. Este ser es tan poderoso que no le puede eliminar, pero si alejarlo por un tiempo.
(*) El Corral de Pesca es un ingenioso método practicado por los habitantes de Chiloé para atrapar peces y mariscos. En la playa se construye un cerco semicircular de varas, cuya cara convexa queda de frente al mar, y su cara cóncava mira hacia la tierra. Cuando sube la marea, el corral queda bajo agua, y cuando la marea vuelve a bajar los peces que se acercaron hasta la orilla quedan atrapados siendo así muy fácil recolectarlos.
The Cuchivilu
The Cuchivilu ( Cuch = pig, Vilu= snake ) is a sea monster half pig and half snake with a voracious appetite, of a stealthy attitude and treacherous behavior
It inhabits the swampy beaches of Chiloe. At night, it leaves its cave, near a ravine in order to eat where there is a sea ranch(*) on shore, finding fish and mollusks left by some anglers.
It always leaves track of its misdeeds such as ; footsteps on the sand and the sticks of the fence used for coastal fishing are usually broken due to its voracious appetite.

Sometimes, its grunt can be heard at night, which is very similar to the grunt of an ordinary pig. However, if someone tries to see it, it vanishes and it can only be seen by witches or warlocks.
It is also said if a sea ranch is attacked by The Cuchivilu, it leaves a very particular stink which bewitches the place hindering the fishermen’s work.
If someone tries to enter the place, he or she may get scabies.
The only way to eliminate the spell, is through a Machi who would use very unusual canticles in strange languages and a ritual of dances with lots of smoke to keep away the spell from the place. This powerful being, The Cuchivilu can not be eliminated, yet it can be kept away by using these devices.
(*) The Sea Ranch is an ingenious method often practiced by the inhabitants of Chiloe to catch fish and shellfish. On the sea shore, a semi-circular fence made with sticks is built .It has two faces, its convex face overlooks the sea and the concave one overlooks the land.
When the tide is high, the ranch is underwater, and when it is low, the fish and shellfish which approached it were caught there, in this way it is very easy to collect them.
