Los Brujos son personas que poseen muchos conocimientos de la vida y de la muerte, emiten un fluido mágico que trasforma la mente de los demás. Los brujos en Chiloé son miembros de una institución secreta: "La Recta Provincia".
A muchos de los que han visitado este sitio les llama la atención que en Chiloé, haya no solamente mujeres, sino que también muchos hombres que ejercen este "don".
Cómo se llega a ser Brujo
Una vez seleccionado muy meticulosamente el candidato por la Recta Provincia, se le somete a una serie de pruebas.
Entre estas pruebas están:
- Ingerir alimentos indigestos
- Baños en el Penchaico durante las noches más heladas del invierno
- Emboscadas en caminos solitarios
- Permanencias nocturnas recostado sobre la tumba de algún cementerio.
Con el objeto de borrar el bautismo Cristiano, al candidato se le somete a una ducha en el Río Traiguén. Durante 12 noches consecutivas el iniciado acude a una pequeña cascada donde recibirá un chorro de agua en medio de la coronilla.
Otra manera de borrar el bautismo es lavar la cabeza y cuerpo del iniciado con sangre de un recién nacido "no bautizado".
Las pruebas que siguen son aún más duras, y si el iniciado no tiene realmente el "don", dificilmente las superará.
Con todas estas pruebas se logra una gran fortaleza mental y una sensibilidad tan aguda, que les permite percibir los pensamientos hasta de las personas mas puras.
Tras la cadena de prueba el iniciado está casi listo para ingresar a las filas de los "sin alma". Finalizado el período de pruebas el elegido es llevado ante la presencia de la "Mayoría" en la "Cueva Mayor", la cual originalmente se ubicaba en las cercanías de Quicaví (de quin=conocer y cahuin=reunión, o sea reunión para aprender). Debido a que este escondite fue descubierto, actualmente la Recta Provincia opera en un lugar totalmente desconocido, pero que en teoría debe ser de carcaterísticas similares a la Cueva de Quicaví.
La Cueva de Quicaví es un sitio subterráneo con varias dependencias. Mide aproximadamente 200 m. de largo por 3 de alto, y se le iluminaba con antorchas y cántaros de aceite humano.
El candidato era introducido en la Cueva y presentado ante La Mayoría reunida en sesión solemne y presidida por el Buta (Brujo Mayor, de Futa=gran). La Mayoría decidirá la última prueba.
En muchos casos esta prueba consiste asesinar al ser más querido por el candidato a brujo.
La ejecución de esta prueba se llevará a efecto un día martes en la noche, previo juramento que incluye fidelidad a Lucifer, quien es jefe supremo honorífico de los Brujos.
Una vez completada la última prueba, nuevamente se reúne La Recta Provincia. El candidato se ceñirá el famoso Macuñ, que consiste en un chaleco hecho con la piel del pecho de una mujer muerta en estado de virginidad, y que debe ser confeccionado previamente por el mismo aspirante a brujo. Este chaleco-instrumento dota al brujo de la habilidad de volar. Entonces empezará un suculento banquete, cuyo plato principal es carne de "guagüita" asada
Tras el banquete se recluye al iniciado durante un tiempo portando una lagartija en la frente sujeta con un pañuelo rojo. Este ritual tiene como fin que el reptil le comunique sabiduría al nuevo miembro de la brujería.
Tras ello el aprendiz de brujo es puesto en manos de miembros antiguos, quienes le enseñarán a volar, transformarse en diversos animales, introducirse en las casas para dañar a sus moradores, a conocer los poderes tóxicos y medicinales de diferentes plantas, utilizar el caballo marino, adormecer personas, etc.
Eso si a los brujos se les prohibe violar o robar, ya que aunque ejercen el mal, los brujos poseen un "Código de Moral".
Los brujos tienen el poder de dañar a otras personas, siempre y cuando hayan sido autorizados por la jefatura de la Brujería. Cuando una persona es afectada por alguno de estos hechizos se dice que se le han hecho un mal, el cual puede ir desde largos rasguños o simples sajaduras hechas en diferentes partes del cuerpo, hasta el Llancaso (de llancún=caer) o muerte lenta por envenenamiento. También se utiliza la toma de alientos, que termina en una muerte angustiosa del afectado.
Estos tormentos son efectuados por el Brujo, en el organismo de un sapo que representa a la persona a la que se le está haciendo el mal.
Cuando el Brujo desea volar, debe someterse a un régimen sin sal, y estará listo cuando le lagrimeé un ojo. Hecha entonces el poncho hacia atrás y deja descubierto el macuñ. invoca al Demonio pronunciando con firmeza "arrehalhue", y así se eleva por el aire a gran velocidad.
El macuñ, aparte de permitir al brujo el vuelo de una isla a otra, o más allá, es un instrumento que orienta su vuelo, señalando su camino con una luz blanquecina, suave y penetrante producida por la magia de los cauquiles (anélido fosforescente, nortiluca) de los cuales está impregnado.
Cuando el Brujo desea descender, dice "Macuñ: arréame Diablo" y desciende rápidamente, pero aterrizando con suavidad. El Macuñ, es de propiedad personal de cada brujo y posee vida propia que le une inseparablemente a su amo, a tal punto que si se llega a perder, basta que el Brujo diga "che-che", para que vuelva a sus manos.
Cuando el brujo se lo quita, este automáticamente se enrosca sobre si mismo. Si algún extraño osa tratar de tocarlo, se extiende bruscamente produciendo un fantasmal grito que ahuyenta al intruso.
Con respecto a la Cueva de Quicaví y otras que usan los bujos como escondite, su entrada se encuentra en una quebrada cubierta de quilas y otras plantas. Además protege la entrada el Invunche.
Cada Cueva es presidida por una jefatura o Consejo de la Cueva presidida por 13 brujos que controlan el comportamiento de sus subalternos. Para poder realizar su tarea con mayor facilidad se sirven del Chayanco, aparato está instalado en una de las dependencias de la cueva similar a un computador conectado a Internet, que registra y permite observar todos los actos de cada uno de los miembros de la logia, desde el primer momento en que ingresó a la brujería. En otra dependencia alejada de la entrada los brujos mantienen lo que se llama el Levisterio o Reviserio, instrumento que se utiliza para hacer diversos exámenes.
The Warlocks and Witches
The Warlocks and Witches are people who have a wide knowledge of life and death, they send out a magic fluid which may transform everybody’s mind. The Warlocks and Witches from Chiloé are members of a secret institution called “The Recta Provincia”
Very many people visiting Chiloé have been surprised by the number of men practicing this “GIFT”, since it is more usual among women than in men.
How can you become a witch or warlock?
One the candidate has been carefully and meticulously selected by “The Recta Provincia”, he or she is subjected to some challenges. Among these tests we have:
- Eating indigestible food
- Taking baths in the Penchaico during the coldest nights in winter.
- Been laid an ambush on him/het in solitary roads
- Staying alone on a grave in some cemetery
The candidate is subjected to have a bath in “Traiguén River” in order to wash away his/her Christian Baptism. The beginner goes to a water fall during twelve consecutive nights, there he will receive a dash of water in the middle of the crown of his/her head.
One way to wash away Baptism is washing the beginner’s head and the body with blood a newly born non baptized baby.
The challenges are even harder, and if the beginner does not actually possess the GIFT, he will not overcome them all.
Great mental strength and a sharp sensitivity are achieved after going through all these challenges. , Warlocks and Witches can even perceive the thoughts of very pure people.
After going through and overcoming all these challenges, the beginner is almost ready to join up the group of The People without Soul. When this period finishes he or she is taken to the presence of the “The Majority” in the “Main Cave”, which was usually located near Quicaví ( coming from quin = know and cahuin = reunion, that is to say a reunion to learn). Due to the fact that this hideout was discovered, The Recta Provincia currently works in an unknown place, yet it should have similar characteristics to The Quicaví Cave.
The Quicaví Cave is an underground place with several premises. It is about 200 meters wide and, 3 meters high, and it is illuminated by torches and jugs full of human oil.
The candidate is placed inside the cave and presented to The Majority. This a solemn and plenary session and it is chaired by The Buta ( The Greatest Warlock (from buta= great) The Majority decides on the last challenge for the beginner.
Most of the time, it consists of the murder of the beginner’s most loved person, and this is carried out by himself.
This is carried out on a Thursday night, after swearing royalty and faithfulness to Lucifer, The Devil, who is the honorary and supreme head of all Warlocks and Witches.
Once the last challenge is accomplished, The Recta Provincia congregates again. The candidates put on the famous Macuñ, which consists of a vest made up of chest skin of a woman who has died being still a virgin and this vest has to be made by the same beginner or candidate to be a Warlock or Witch. This vest endows the candidate with the power of flying, So then, he or she starts his delicious banquet where the main course is “Roast Baby”
After the banquet, the beginner is confined during a period of time. He must have a small lizard on his/her forehead which is tied up around it with a scarf.
Afterwards, older members of this institution take care of him/her, they teach him /her to fly, to transform himself into diverse sorts of animals break into houses hurt the people living there, get to know different toxic and medical powers of plants, use the sea horse, numb people and so on.
Warlocks and Witches are forbidden to steal or rape, since in spite of doing evil, they possess a Code of Morals
These beings have the power of causing damage to other people, as long as they have been allowed to do so by the Leadership of Witchcraft. When a person has been affected by one of their spells, it is said that the person is bewitched, evil has been done to him.
This MAL can go from long scratches or simple incisions in different parts of the body to The Llancaso (coming from the word llancún = fall) or slow death due to poisoning.
Food poisoning is also used and the victim dies in a very distressing way.
All the torments are carried out by The Warlock or The Witch , by using a toad which represents the person to whom the spell is being cast.
When The Warlock or Witch wants to fly, they have to go on a diet or meal plan with salt, and he or she is ready when tears run from one of his/her eyes. The Warlock or Witch wears a poncho , when taking off his/her poncho is moved towards his back and the Mancuñ is uncovered. The Devil is called on, pronouncing loudly and steadily this word : "arrehalhue", and he takes off from the ground and quickly rises up into the air.
The Macuñ apart from allowing The Warlock or Witch to move from one island to another, or afterlife, it is a guiding device showing the way through a whitish, soft and piercing light produced by the magic of the Cauquiles ( phosphorescent segmented worms called Nortiluca,) with which he is totally impregnated.
When The Warlock or Witch wishes to descend, This phrase must be said :
"Macuñ: arréame Diablo” and he/she goes down very gently. The Macuñ is a personal belonging of each Warlock or Witch, and it has life of its own which is strongly joined to his master’s life. This is so to such an extend, if this Macuñ by any chance is lost, The Warlock or Witch just by saying “Che, che” can get it back.
When The Warlock or Witch takes The Macuñ off, this automatically coils up. If a stranger dares to touch it, this spreads abruptly producing a ghostly yell, scaring to death the intruder.
As far as The Quincaví Cave is concerned and other caves used by Warlocks and Witches as a hideout, its entrance is located in ravine covered by Quilas and other types of plants. Besides, The Invunche protects the entrance as well.
Each cave is chaired by the Leadership or The Board of The Cave, composed of thirteen Warlocks always controlling the subordinates behavior. In order to carry out their task more easily, they use The Chayanco, equipment installed in one of the Cave premises, it is very similar to a computer connected to The Internet, registering and watching over the behavior of each of the lodge, from the very first moment he or she started practicing witchcraft. In another premised, located far away from the entrance, The Levisterio or Reviserio is located, this is used to carry out diverse examinations.
