The Trauco

The Trauco is a man 65 centimeter high, not higher than a stick = Vara as it is said in Chiloé.

He is sturdy and walks very slowly because he has neither toes nor heels. Therefore, he walks with a small stick called Pahueldón or sometimes with a stone axe called Toki

His strength is so powerful that with 3 blows with an axe can knock down trees no matter how thick they are.

He lives in holes of trees and he wears quilineja and wood moss. He likes eating a variety of berry called “murta” and he also likes gazing at the landscape from any high branch of some tree in the wood.

It is believed that he is a spirit which could not get into hell. He hates men and women walking around his domains in the thickness of the wood where he is the master and protector. If he happens to run into them , he can crook them with his look or kill them depending on the situation.

His fianceé is the Trauca, also called Fiura with whom he walks around the wood, and when he is sure that the Fiura is far away, he starts looking for virgin women who dare to walk nearby.

When he runs into a woman he turns her into a cane, el Pahueldón ,a flute used by him to blow women dazing them in order to bewitch them with his sensual look. Once they are asleep he has sex with them thus producing an immediate pregnancy. The children born from this relation, are called by the wood to take over when his father, the master
dies.

If by any chance, a fatal one, we find ourselves in front of him, we had better not look into his eyes, since this means we will be disabled or crooked instantly. However, if you are quick and have a fast mind, you can throw at his eyes a handful of sand, the Trauco becomes ecstatic counting the grains of sand, and you have the opportunity to run away in that moment.

It is also said that he is never interested in married women, and that when he is infatuated with some woman, he leaves his yellowish manure at the doorway of the girl’s house.
