Vipoñi textualmente significa reptil de las papas (de vilu=serpiente, reptil y poñi=papa). Su aspecto es de una lagartija de gran tamaño y se oculta en los galpones donde encuentra abunde su alimento favorito: ratones y arañas.
El amo del Vilpoñi es algún brujo, y tiene varias misiones. Primero proteje las cosechas de papas de sus amos al acabar con las plagas que puedan afectarlas.
En segundo lugar sirve a su amo para pejudicar las cosechas de las víctimas de su amo. Aprovechando que despierta en las noches hambriento, brujo lo envía en dirección de las cosechas de papas de algún desafortunado, donde come los tiernos brotes de papas, arruinando la cosecha.
Por un lado las víctimas del ataque del Vilpoñi suelen ser personas que no pagan el tributo pedido por los brujos, y por otro lado aquellos que si pagan el tributo u obedencen las órdenes de los brujos se benfician con la protección que ejerce este mágico animal sobre su plantaciones de papas.
Durante los períodos de inactividad, el Vilpoñi iberna y sólo despierta cuando tiene mucha hambre.
The Vilpoñi
Vipoñi literally means reptile of the potato plants ( coming from vilu = reptile and poñi = potato) It is similar to a huge lizard and it hides in storehouses where it finds its usual food and favourite food : mice and spiders.
The Vipoñi’s master is some warlock or witch and this being has several missions. Firstly, it protects the crops belonging to its masters and it exterminates plagues which may eventually affect them..
Second, it is usually sent to damage the crops of its master’s victims. Taking advantage of its insatiable hunger which is stronger at night, the warlock or witch sends it to the potato crop of some unlucky and ill-fated person, where it eats potato sprouts ,thus ruining the crops.
On the one hand, Vipoñi’s victims are usually people who have not paid the tribute asked by witchcraft and on the other hand, those people who pay tribute receive the benefit of this, having the protection given by this magic animal in their potato crops.
During inactive periods, The Vipoñi hibernates and it only wakes up when it is really, really hungry.
