Es el celoso guardián de los metales y tesoros que oculta el subsuelo. En las oscuras y tranquilas noches cercanas al solsticio de invierno, Carbunco suele hacer súbitas apariciones bajo la forma de un diminuto y muy hermoso perrillo blanco, rodeado de una aureola roja verdosa.
Para otros el Carbunco se manifiesta sólo como una luminosidad, para otros tiene el aspecto de un molusco bivalvo que despide luz producida por luciérnagas.
El Carbunco emerge súbitamente desde el suelo simulando una llamarada. Se detiene por breves instantes y si alguien lo ve, desaparece como si se lo tragase la tierra o corre velozmente para desparecer en el matorral más cercano.
Si alguien tiene la suerte de verlo y sin miedo le lanzar una cuerda u otro objeto que le permitiese amarrarlo, logrará que el Carbunco tome el objeto y desaparezca con él. Al día siguiente, antes que alumbre el sol, el afortunado debe recorrer el lugar buscando el objeto lanzado. Generalmente el objeto será encontrado al pie de un Calafate, enterrado muy disimuladamente dejando sólo una punta visible.
Es en este sitio se encuentra un tesoro enterrado. Sin embargo para obtenerlo se debe proceder de la siguiente manera: se debe acudir a medianoche llevando una pala nueva. Además se debe ir acompañado de una anciana viuda y un gato negro (algunos dicen que la presencia femenina podría malograr la búsqueda del tesoro).
Se debe cavar hasta lograr una vara de profundidad. Entonces se debe lanzar el gato negro al hoyo. El felino desaparecerá instantáneamente. Se debe cavar hasta lograr otra vara más de profundidad. Lo que sucede a continuación es que el gato negro vuelve a aparecer por arte de magia en los brazos de la anciana. Inmediatamente se debe volver a lanzar el gato dentro del hoyo. El gato volverá a desaparecer hasta que se complete la siguiente vara de profundidad. Este proceso se debe repetir hasta que por fin se encuentre el tesoro.
El hecho de no arrojar el gato a tiempo por cada vara completada de profundidad puede provocar al muerte del Cazador de tesoros, producto de los gases emitidos por los metales preciosos enterrados. Además el buscador debe actuar sin miedo alguno de lo contrario el tesoro se escabullirá o se convertirá en una roca sin valor.
También se cuenta en los campos del sur de Chile, que el Carbunco toma la forma de una libre, la cual aparece repentinamente ante un afortunado, para luego correr vertiginosamente y desaparecer súbitamente en la mitad de una pampa o entre algunos arbustos. Al tratar de buscar al animal no habrá explicación lógica de como desapareció. Este mágico suceso es prueba segura de que en ese lugar hay un tesoro escondido, conocido vulgarmente como "entierro".
The Carbunco
It is the minded guardian of metals and treasures located underground. During the dark and quiet nights near the winter solstice. It suddenly shows up in the body of a beautiful tiny dog, surrounded by a greenish red halo.
For other people Carbunco appears as a light, whereas it has the aspect of a bivalve mollusk for others sending out sparks of light produced by fireflies.
The Carbunco emerges suddenly from the ground in a flame. It stops briefly and if someone happens to see it, it disappears, In other words it is sucked down by the earth and it runs quickly to the nearest bush.
If someone is lucky and sees it and he or she is brave enough to throw a rope or an object to lasso it, he or she will succeed in making The Carbunco disappear when it takes the object. On the next day, before dawn, the lucky one has to walk around the place and look for the object thrown the night before. Generally this object is found at the feet of a Calafate Tree, it is buried craftily leaving one extreme visible.
In this place there is a buried treasure. However, in order to get it; you have to do the following;
You must go there and carry a new wooden shovel. Apart from this, the person must go with an old widow and a black cat (Some people say that a female presence could spoil the treasure hunt).
You have to dig until you reach a stick (measurement typically used in Chiloe) depth. Afterwards, the black cat has to thrown to the hole and it will disappear instantly. You should dig another stick and with this the cat will appear in the old woman’s arms.
Immediately, the black cat must be thrown there again. The cat will disappear once again until another stick is dug. The process has to be done until the treasure is found.
If the cat is not thrown in due time, the digging can cause the Treasure Hunter’s Death. This Death will be the result of all the gases caused by the precious metals buried there. Besides, the Treasure Hunter must be brave otherwise the treasure will turn into a rock without any value.
It is also said that in some farms in the countryside in South of Chile . The Carbunco has the body of a hare, which suddenly appears in front of the lucky person and then it runs vertiginously and vanishes in the middle of the pampa in some bushes. When you try to find it, there is no logical explanation for its vanishing. This magic event is a proof of the existence of a Hidden Treasure, commonly known as “The Burial”
