El Caleuche es un buque que navega vagabundo por los mares de Chiloé y los canales del sur. Está tripulado por brujos poderosos y en las noches oscuras va profusamente iluminado. Durante sus travesías, a bordo se escucha música sin cesar.
Si es necesario se oculta en medio de una densa neblina, que él mismo produce. Jamás navega a la luz del día.
Si casualmente una persona, que no sea bruja se acerca, el Caleuche se transforma en un simple madero flotante, y si el individuo intenta apoderarse del madero, éste retrocede. Otras veces se convierte en una roca o en otro objeto cualquiera y se hace invisible.
Sus tripulantes tienen la capacidad de transformarse en lobos marinos o en aves acuáticas. Se asegura, que los tripulantes tienen una sola pierna para andar y que la otra está doblada por la espalda, por lo tanto andan a saltos y brincos.
No hay que mirarlo, porque los tripulantes castigan al que lo hace, dejándoles la boca torcida, la cabeza hacia la espalda o matándole de repente gracias al elevado manejo que tienen de la brujería. El que quiera mirar al buque y no sufrir el castigo de la torcedura, debe tratar que los tripulantes no se den cuenta.
Este buque navega cerca de la costa y cuando la tripulación se apodera de una persona, la llevan a visitar ciudades del fondo del mar y le descubren inmensos tesoros, invitándola a participar en ellos con la sola condición de no divulgar lo que han visto. El que no respete esta condicion será asesinado por los tripulantes del Caleuche en la primera ocasión que volvieran a encontrarse con él.
Todos los que mueren ahogados son recogidos por el Caleuche, el cual tiene la facultad de hacer la navegación submarina y aparecer en el momento preciso en que se le necesita para recoger a los náufragos y guardarlos en su seno, que les sirve de mansión eterna.
Cuando el Caleuche necesita reparar su casco o sus máquinas escoge de preferencia los barrancos y acantilados, y allí, a altas horas de la noche, procede al trabajo.
The Caleuche
The Caleuche is a vessel which wanders aimlessly in the seas of Chiloe and the canals of the South. It is crewed by powerful warlocks and during dark nights it sails totally illuminated. During its voyages, endless playing music can be heard.
If it is necessary, it is hidden in the thick fog which is produced by itself. It never sails during daytime.
If an ordinary person, that is to say, someone who is neither a warlock nor a witch approaches it, The Cauleche becomes an ordinary floating wood log, and if the person tries to seize it, this log goes backwards. Other times, it turns into a rock or any other object and becomes invisible.
Its crew have the ability of transforming themselves into sea lions or any sea bird. It is claimed that the crew members have one leg only and that the other is bent along the back, therefore they are hopping all the time.
it must not be watched, because the crew members punish people who do it, leaving their mouths crooked, the head towards the back, or just killing them due to their highly developed witchcraft.
If you want to see the vessel without enduring such a hard punishment, you have to do it secretly ,that is to say, not being noticed by the crew.
The vessel sails along the coast and when the crew members get hold of a person , they take him or her to visit the cities in the bottom of the sea and they reveal the huge treasures in them, inviting these people to share them under the condition of not telling anyone what they have seen. The person who does not respect this agreement is killed
by the crew of The Caleuche on the first occasion they see the person again.
Everyone who dies drowned is collected by The Caleuche, which has the faculty of doing submarine navigation and showing up in the precise moment to collect all the shipwrecked people and keep them in its bosom, an eternal mansion.
When The Caluche needs to repair its engines chooses ravines or cliffs to do it.
